Cetacean Marine operates and maintains the 180’ R/V Lake Guardian and the 36’ R/V Mudpuppy II under a long term federal contract let by the US Environmental Protection Agency.  These vessels monitor the quality of the water and marine biological habitat in the Great Lakes Basin.  Lake Guardian is powered by twin Cummins diesels driving conventional propellors.  The vessel has a crew of 14 Cetacean mariners.

Cetacean Marine also operates and maintains the 165' RV Athena and RV Athena II.  These are Viet Nam era patrol gunboats converted for service as research vessels.  They are powered by twin Cummins diesels and one LM-1500 gas turbine driving controllable pitch propellors and are capable of speeds exceeding 35 knots.  These vessels have a crew of five Cetacean mariners.

Cetacean Marine further operates the 135' diving tenders YDT 17 and YDT 18.  These are purpose built vessels powered by twin Cat 3508 diesels driving Hamilton Waterjets.  These vessels have a crew of five Cetacean mariners and are employed in the training of military divers.


What’s a cetacean? 

Ce.ta.cean (si ta’shen) n. [L. cetus], large sea animal; any of an order (Cetacea) of nearly hairless, fishlike water mammals, lacking external hind limbs, but having paddle-like forelimbs. Whales, porpoises and dolphins are cetaceans.
